Medieval legend spoke of one man who was desperate to find building materials for his house, so he stole cobblestones from the road surface. The remaining hole filled with water and a horseman who later walked through the 'puddle' found himself drowning. [ citation needed] A similar legend, of a young boy drowning in a puddle that formed in a pothole in a major street in the early years of Seattle, Washington, is told as part of the Seattle Underground Tour. Keeler R. (2008). Natural playscapes: Creating outdoor play environments for the soul. Redmond: Exchange Press. The kids started asking for it and I told it every day for about two months. When I sent out a bunch of stories to publishers, that was the one that got chosen to be my first book, even though it wasn’t the first story I had ever made up. Always keep an eye on babies and smaller children during mud play. While they may get some in their mouth or on their face, avoid letting them eat mud or get it in their eyes while they squish and explore. The rest is fair game! a b Lynch, David K.; Hudnut, Kenneth W. (August 2008). "The Wister Mud Pot Lineament: Southeastward Extension or Abandoned Strand of the San Andreas Fault?" (PDF). Let’s start with the artwork. I don’t know why they decided to put new artwork in this book, but the original was published in 1982 and Munsch did the artwork, but there is no way it could be worse than the artwork of Sami Suomalainen. I think it’s terrible. I really don’t like the new do and I would rather see Robert’s artwork anyway. I don’t know what the publishing company was thinking. The new edition came out in 1995. Big mistake. Mud Puddle was the first story that I ever made into a book. I made it up one very wet Spring in 1976 when I was working in a nursery school. I got the idea that the kids might like a story about mud; so I made up a story about a mud puddle that jumped on kids from out of trees. The kids thought it was a great story. The first time I told it they went out into the playground and looked up in the trees for mud puddles. They thought that mud puddles living in trees would explain why they got dirty so much. I decided that it was a pretty good story. Some Orthoptera– e.g. the yellow-spined bamboo locust ( Ceracris kiangsu) – are attracted to human urine, specifically to the sodium and ammonium ions in it. [15] Those Lepidoptera that are attracted to dung (e.g. Zeuxidia spp.) or carrion seem to prefer ammonium ions rather than sodium. [16] In rotting, the tissues of fruits release sugars and other organic compounds such as alcohols that result from the metabolic processes of decay organisms, used as fuel by butterflies. [17]

Scatter the bicarbonate of soda on a flat surface and you can drip acid on it to write messages or make shapes. If you’re concerned that germs in mud might affect your child’s health, the Mayo Clinic confirms that playing in the mud can be healthy for your little one in more ways than one. Medley S.R. & Eisner, T. (1996): Sodium: a male nuptial gift to its offspring. PNAS 93(2): 809–813. PDF fulltext Puddles commonly form during rain, and can cause problems for transport. Due to the angle of the road, puddles tend to be forced by gravity to gather on the edges of the road. This can cause splashing as cars drive through the puddles, which causes water to be sprayed onto pedestrians on the pavement. Irresponsible drivers may do this deliberately, which, in some countries, can lead to prosecution for careless driving. [3] Our favourite chemical reaction is sodium bicarbonate and acid. Bicarbonate of soda can be found in baking aisles and you can use any type of vinegar or lemon/lime juice for the acid. The result of mixing the two is an explosion of frothy bubbles as the acid reacts with the sodium bicarbonate to form carbonic acid which then breaks down into carbon dioxide and Water. Favourite bit of kit: water! Ease yourself in gently if new to it all – make potions/stews by adding just leaves/flowers/stones/bark/seeds … or food colouring! Kids can find dry mud (scraped or dug with a teaspoon) to add and sprinkle in as they (and you) feel ready!
