About this deal

Practical button layout and a vibrant display makes operating Elan Connect+ a hassle-free experience. Browsing menus, selecting stations and adjusting settings are both simple and intuitive. For around the home Three dedicated preset buttons are next to the tuning control. The radio only has six presets with three for digital stations and three for FM. Saving and recalling presets is very easy. Once you own such a radio, all you need to do is turn it on and let it search the available radio stations so you can choose and listen to your preferred programme. With DAB selected as a source, we were able to tune in a plethora of digital radio stations in under a minute, each one with scrolling text and other station information nicely presented in a compact and colourful way.

The single line display with large characters, an included mains adapter and simple operation make this an ideal radio for many users. Not everyone will want or need displays with lots of information or Bluetooth connectivity. Batteries can be inserted at the rear of the radioThe Menu button opens the various options which are relevant to the current mode. The large display makes these quite easy to browse and alter. Turn and press to select menu options. If listening to content, turn to adjust the volume & tap to mute the volume. Rear panel connections That comes with advantages, however – not least a 643g weight (around 770g, if you insert the four AA batteries to make it portable). We also liked its unusually small depth; measuring 115 x 82 x 247mm, it’s far less dominating on a kitchen workshop than some rival DABs.

To browse the list of stations the forward/Stations button has to be pressed first. This opens the list of stored stations which can be browsed by turning the rotary knob left and right. A different station can be selected by pushing in the knob. This works well but if you forget to press the Stations button first you’ll find yourself changing the volume. Perhaps the clearest sound comes via Bluetooth streaming, which was a surprise (it’s so often the low point of DAB radios attempting to also be streaming devices). So if you mainly listen to podcasts that aren’t accessible via internet radio, then this unit could work well for you.

Pure’s DAB+ radio with CD player is a device that can receive the digital DAB+ format and is also able to play CDs. It looks like a normal CD player but has the added functionality of a DAB+ radio. We selected DAB and it immediately tuned-in dozens of stations, presenting them in a linear list that was easy to scan through. Each channel features a colourful display that shows an icon and scrolling text, although the text is reduced to a size where most of it can be presented at once.

And if that was not enough, the signal can transmit additional information such as artist, song title, album cover and even videos. 80% less energy consumption for improved signal reception is another advantage. It's important for us to compare the performance of each product against the specs claimed by its manufacturers, which is why we take the time to ensure the battery life (in portable models), connectivity, feature set and sound quality is as good as the brands say it is.
