Description

However, the series took on a life of its own and grew far beyond the original characters into ten episodes with eleven being in the offing and eight, hour long episodes each. The second series, set in 1958, shows the introduction of gas and air as a form of pain relief, unexploded ordnance, an outbreak of tuberculosis, a baby born with spina bifida and ends with the condemning of the Nonnatus House building. A reconstructed prefab house at the Chiltern Open Air Museum in Buckinghamshire has also been used as a filming location.

But really people do the best they can under the circumstances, and that’s all that is to these, too. Remarkable stories, as are some of the recreations of the accounts of several of the more difficult deliveries, especially as Jenny is being indoctrinated into the system of the House, the nuns, and the other midwives. Interesting too, were the descriptions of the extreme poverty and life for thousands next to London's port and docks. However, her books, especially those which were reissued, became instant hits and shifted over a million copies in her home country alone. This final book in Jennifer Worth's memories of her time as a midwife in London's East end brings her story full circle.

I descend from three generations of British and Indian Army officers and Indian freedom fighters in both my bloodlines, and nothing rings firmer than this statement. Critical reception has been mostly positive, and the series has won numerous awards and nominations. Everything is perceived differently all over the world, and there is no one view on any aspect of existence.

Don't get me wrong, they are still good but just quite so good as the first but definitely well worth a read!
